What to ask your interior designer at the first meeting (and why the answers matter)

The first meeting with an interior designer in Mallorca is much more than an exchange of ideas about colours and styles. It is the moment to establish whether you can work well together, whether the studio has the right experience for your project and whether the way they manage the process gives you confidence or doubts.

Many clients arrive at that first meeting without knowing what to ask, and that puts them at a disadvantage.

This article brings together the questions you should ask —and the answers you should get— before committing to any interior design studio in Mallorca.

Have you worked on projects similar to mine?

Not every interior design studio has the same experience with every type of project. Some studios specialise in retail, others in hospitality, others in residential homes. Some are versatile and have a portfolio across several types; others always work within the same niche.

The answer you are looking for isn’t an automatic yes. It is a yes backed by concrete examples: projects similar to yours in type, scale and context.

Ask to see the portfolio of projects similar to yours. And look not only at the photos, but at whether the studio can explain the initial challenge and how they solved it.

Who will run my project within the studio?

In interior design studios with several professionals, there is an important difference between the person who gives the sales presentation and the person who runs the project day to day. It is a legitimate and necessary question: who will you actually be working with? Will you have a single point of contact, or will the project pass through several hands?

Continuity in the client–designer relationship is essential for the project to evolve consistently. Every time the contact person changes, context, nuance and accumulated trust are lost.

A studio that guarantees a single project manager from start to handover is a studio that understands how the client relationship works.

How does the budget work? Is it fixed or an estimate?

One of the main sources of conflict in interior design projects is the gap between the initial budget and the final cost. This happens when the starting budget is only an estimate and doesn’t properly account for every item, for unforeseen costs or for the changes the client introduces along the way.

The question to ask is direct: when will you give me a detailed, fixed budget? What is included and what isn’t? How are changes I request during the work handled? Do they cost extra?

A serious studio can give you clear answers to these questions from the outset. If the answers are vague, or if the initial budget is very low and «will be adjusted as we go», that is a warning sign.

What are the real timescales for the project?

In Mallorca, timescales follow their own logic, shaped by the season. Many second-home owners want the house ready for summer, and many projects start with that goal. The question to ask is whether that deadline is realistic given the current state of the property, the scope of the work and the availability of trades on the island.

An honest interior designer will tell you whether the timescale you have in mind is feasible. And if it isn’t, they will explain why and suggest alternatives: working in phases, setting priorities or an adjusted schedule that has the essentials ready on time.

Be wary of anyone who says yes to everything without qualification. Interior design projects in Mallorca have real complexities that an experienced professional knows about and communicates openly.

Can you provide references from previous clients?

This is the question people ask least and the one that tells you most. A studio with a track record and satisfied clients has no problem providing references.

Talking directly to someone who has worked with the studio gives you a perspective no portfolio photo can: what day-to-day communication is like, how problems are handled when they come up, whether the final result matched what was promised.

The first meeting with an interior designer is an opportunity for both sides to assess each other.

The studio assesses whether it can help you; you assess whether it is the right team. The right questions let you make that decision with real information, not just with the excitement that beautiful projects create.

If you are looking for interior decorators in Palma de Mallorca or anywhere else on the island and want to start with an honest conversation, at Trends Studio we will be happy to answer all these questions and any others you may have.
