Interior decor in Palma de Mallorca has changed a great deal in recent years. What used to be understood as “Mallorcan style” —stone arches, encaustic cement tiles, rustic furniture— has given way to a more sophisticated, contemporary version that keeps the essence of the Mediterranean while embracing modernity.

Second homes, holiday rentals and new-build projects on the island have driven this evolution, and today Mallorca is a European benchmark for high-quality Mediterranean interior design.

If you are thinking of renovating or decorating your home in Mallorca, these are the trends that define the moment and that a good interior decorator in Mallorca will help you apply with good judgement.

Contemporary Mediterranean style is the synthesis of the islands’ building and decorative traditions and current trends in interior design. It is not Nordic minimalism transplanted to the south, nor a nostalgic look back at the past. It is something of its own: warm, bright, honest in its materials and balanced in its composition.

Its main features are the presence of natural materials —stone, wood, linen—, a colour palette of neutral and earthy tones, a fluid relationship between inside and outside, and lighting that makes the most of the island’s natural light.

In interior decor in Palma de Mallorca, materials take the lead. And the ones that dominate the highest-quality projects are always the same: natural stone, exposed wood and linen fabrics.

Natural stone appears on floors, feature walls and architectural elements such as arches or pillars. It brings visual solidity and connects the home with the island’s landscape. Wood —in exposed beams, joinery, floors or furniture— introduces warmth and texture without weighing the space down. And linen, in curtains, cushions and upholstery, adds the organic lightness that characterises well-conceived Mediterranean homes.

These three materials work together because they complement each other: the hardness of stone, the warmth of wood and the softness of linen create a tactile and visual palette that is hard to beat. And they are precisely the materials we use in projects such as the new-build home in Sineu or the home in Cala Vinyes.
