Renovating a bathroom does not always mean taking on a full-scale renovation with weeks of work and a large financial outlay. With a good interior design project, it is possible to completely transform the look, functionality and sense of space of a bathroom, making use of many of the existing elements and keeping construction work to a minimum.

Many homeowners looking to renew their spaces are opting for solutions that update bathrooms or guest toilets, or make them more functional, without demolishing partition walls or tiling and without major changes to the plumbing. In this kind of project, the interior designer plays a key role in making the most of resources and achieving surprising results.

Key steps in a bathroom renovation

Analyse the space before making changes

The first step is a detailed study of the existing bathroom. At Trends Studio we look at aspects such as the layout, artificial and natural light, materials, water points and storage capacity.

In many cases the original layout works well and there is no need to alter the plumbing or drainage, one of the items that drives up the cost of any renovation the most. Keeping the washbasin, toilet or shower where they are reduces costs and significantly shortens the time needed to complete the work.

Update wall and floor finishes without demolition

One of the most widely used solutions today is to update walls and floors without removing the existing finishes.

"Classic

New materials make it possible to apply finishes over old tiles using:

  • Microcement.

  • Seamless coatings.

  • Specialist bathroom paints.

  • Waterproof decorative panels.

  • Heavy-duty vinyl coverings.

  • Wallpaper.

    "Bathroom

These alternatives avoid generating rubble and give the bathroom a completely new look with minimal intervention.

    New furniture and sanitaryware

Furniture has a huge influence on how a bathroom looks. Replacing an old vanity unit with a wall-hung one adds visual lightness, makes cleaning easier and creates a greater sense of space.

In the same way, fitting new washbasins, taps or shower screens can completely update the room without the need for a full renovation.

    "Bathroom

Finishes in matt black, brushed steel, bronze, natural stone or minimalist white allow the design to be adapted to contemporary, elegant styles.

    The importance of lighting

Lighting is one of the most effective tools in interior design for transforming a bathroom.

    Adding:

    • Backlit mirrors.

    • Indirect LED lighting.

    • Decorative light points.

    • Dimmable systems.

    • Making the most of any natural light source (a window).

improves everyday functionality and creates much cosier atmospheres.

      "Microcement

A well-thought-out project can greatly increase the sense of space and comfort through a new lighting strategy alone.

      Materials, colours and sensations

The choice of materials and colours is decisive when it comes to modernising a bathroom without major building work.

Light tones, natural textures, stone-effect finishes, engineered wood or seamless surfaces help create spaces that look larger and brighter.

Likewise, a consistent design across finishes, furniture, lighting and accessories gives the feeling of a complete renovation even when the changes have been minimal.

For example, bathroom furniture in neutral tones creates an elegant, balanced and timeless base. Within that composition, introducing a standout element —such as a vanity unit in a different colour or with a finish that subtly breaks up the scheme— adds personality, contrast and visual richness to the space. This approach works particularly well in interior design, as it enhances the design without overloading the room and turns a functional piece into a decorative focal point.
